TecQuipment Thick Cylinder Apparatus
The Thick Cylinder Apparatus is an self-contained bench-top system which assists in illustrating the effects of stress and strain upon thick-walled cylinders. It enables users to investigate radial and hoop stress and strain distributions within the cylinder wall, offering a simple means of comparing their measurement data with theoretical calculations based upon the Lamé theory. It consists of a substantial base intended for bench-top use, which supports an aluminum cylinder suspended in a rigid frame. With a hand-operated hydraulic pump, students can pressurize an oil-filled cylinder, record corresponding strain values at different pressures, and then compare these measured values with theoretical calculations.
